High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

At Yarrawarrah Public School, the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy promotes engagement and challenge for every student, regardless of background, across intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.

It supports every student to achieve their educational potential, through talent development opportunities and differentiated teaching and learning practices, to ensure that their specific learning and wellbeing needs are met.

Yarrawarrah offers a number of programs for Gifted and Talented students:

Night of Notables

Students in Years 5-6 are given the opportunity to participate in our exciting extension program. Students work individually and collaboratively to research, design, solve problems using logic and reasoning, and learn public speaking and presentation skills. The program culminates in an evening presentation of a notable person to our community.

Enrichment Programs

Working with our local high school, students have access to literacy and numeracy enrichment activites throughout the year.

Sporting teams and pathways

PSSA and Sydney East sporting teams provide an opportuninity for gifted sporting students to further develop their skills. Trials for various sports are offered to applicable studnets throughout the year.

Game Changer Competition

A Department of Education run competition pushing students to research and solve a societal issue, based upon the UN Sustainable goals. In 2024, Yarrawarrah were one of only 12 primary schools in the state to make the grand finals.

External competitions, initatives and workshops

These include ICAS assessments, creative and STEM workshops, and more.

Leadership

There are opportunities for students to practice citizenship and leadership through the student leadership team, the Student Representative Council (SRC), house captains, library monitors, tech team, eco warriors and supporting charity events.
